18.4 The impersonal passive

Serve a riportare un'opinione diffusa senza attribuirla a nessuno. È l'equivalente del si impersonale italiano.

Le due forme

  • It is said that he lives in Paris.
  • He is said to live in Paris.

La prima è più semplice, la seconda più elegante e molto usata nei giornali.

Funziona con say, think, believe, know, report, expect.

Al passato

L'infinito diventa perfetto:

  • He is said to have lived there for years.

Attenzione

Si dice che... non si traduce mai con one says that: si usa il passivo impersonale.

  • It is said that the museum will close. ✅
  • One says that the museum will close. ❌
