44.2 Collective nouns

I nomi collettivi β€” team, family, government, company, staff β€” indicano un gruppo, e possono reggere entrambi i numeri.

Punto di vistaVerboEsempio
il gruppo come bloccosingolareThe team is playing well.
i membri singolipluraleThe team are arguing.

Differenze fra inglesi

L'inglese britannico usa spesso il plurale, l'americano quasi sempre il singolare:

  • BrE: Manchester United are winning.
  • AmE: Manchester United is winning.

Attenzione

Nello scritto curato conviene tenere la stessa scelta per tutta la frase:

  • The team is playing well and it deserves to win. βœ…
  • The team are playing well and they deserve to win. βœ… (BrE)

Nel parlato il misto (the team is… they deserve) si sente spesso ed Γ¨ accettato, ma il verbo deve comunque concordare col suo soggetto: they deserves e it deserve restano sbagliati.
