28.3 Yes/no questions

Le domande chiuse non hanno una parola interrogativa, quindi ne serve una per agganciarle: if o whether.

  • "Are you coming?" β†’ He asked if I was coming.
  • "Do you like it?" β†’ She asked whether I liked it.

Le due parole sono quasi sempre intercambiabili; whether Γ¨ obbligatorio quando Γ¨ seguito subito da or not (whether or not) e dopo una preposizione.

Ordini e richieste

Non si usa if: si passa all'infinito.

  • "Close the door." β†’ He asked me to close the door.
  • "Please wait." β†’ She asked me to wait.

Attenzione

Anche qui if non introduce una condizione:

  • He asked if I was coming. β†’ domanda riportata.
  • If I come, I'll call. β†’ condizione.

Sono la stessa parola con due lavori diversi, e il contesto Γ¨ l'unico modo per distinguerli.
