Alcune espressioni fanno il lavoro di un modale ma si coniugano come verbi normali. Servono proprio dove il modale non arriva, cioè in tutti i tempi che gli mancano.
| Semi-modale | Sostituisce |
|---|---|
| be able to | can |
| have to | must |
| be allowed to | can, per il permesso |
| had better | should, più urgente |
- I will be able to come. → will can non esiste.
- She had to leave early. → musted non esiste.
- You had better hurry.
Attenzione
Siccome si coniugano, tornano a usare do nelle domande e nelle negazioni:
- Do you have to go? ✅ — Have you to go? è arcaico.
- I didn't have to pay. ✅
Had better è l'eccezione: nonostante la forma passata parla del presente o del futuro, ed è seguito dalla forma base — you had better go, non to go.
