Le negazioni dei modali di possibilità hanno una trappola: non negano tutte la stessa cosa.
| Forma | Significato |
|---|---|
| may not / might not | è possibile che non |
| can't / couldn't | è impossibile che |
- She might not come. → forse non viene.
- She can't be at home. → è impossibile che sia a casa.
Le domande
May e might non si usano quasi mai per chiedere una possibilità: si preferisce do you think o is it likely.
- Do you think it will rain? ✅
- Might it rain? → grammaticale ma raro.
May I invece è vivo, ma è una richiesta di permesso: May I come in?
Attenzione
Mustn't e can't non sono intercambiabili: mustn't è un divieto (you mustn't smoke here), can't è un'impossibilità (it can't be true).
