L'inglese ha una scala abbastanza precisa per graduare la probabilità.
| Grado | Forme |
|---|---|
| certo | will, won't |
| molto probabile | is bound to, is sure to |
| probabile | is likely to, will probably |
| possibile | may, might, could |
| improbabile | is unlikely to, probably won't |
| impossibile | can't, couldn't |
- The train is bound to be late. → praticamente certo.
- She is likely to accept. → probabile.
- They are unlikely to come. → improbabile.
La posizione di "probably"
Va dopo will ma prima di won't:
- She will probably come.
- She probably won't come.
Attenzione
Per dire che una cosa è impossibile si usa can't, non mustn't:
- That can't be true. ✅
- That mustn't be true. ❌ → in inglese britannico suona come un divieto.
(Nell'inglese americano must not per una deduzione negativa si sente: He must not be home. Ma la forma sicura ovunque è can't.)
