L'uso più frequente di was going to è raccontare un piano che poi non si è realizzato. La forma contiene già quel sottinteso.
- I was going to call you, but I forgot.
- We were going to go out, but it started raining.
Spesso segue un but: se non c'è, lo si intuisce lo stesso.
Con "would have"
Per un'intenzione mancata si usa anche would have + participio:
- I would have helped, but nobody told me.
Attenzione
I was going to call you e I called you non sono intercambiabili: il primo dice esplicitamente che la telefonata non c'è stata. È una forma utile per scusarsi.
