Per le situazioni irreali o improbabili nel presente: quello che succederebbe se le cose fossero diverse.
Come si forma
if + past simple, would + forma base.
- If I had more time, I would learn the piano. → non ce l'ho.
- If I won the lottery, I would travel. → è improbabile.
"If I were"
Con be si usa were per tutti i soggetti, anche alla prima e terza persona singolare:
- If I were you, I would accept.
If I was si sente nel parlato informale, ma were è la forma corretta e l'unica in If I were you, che è una formula fissa per dare consigli.
Attenzione
Dopo if non va mai would. È l'errore più frequente su questo capitolo:
- If I had money, I would buy it. ✅
- If I would have money, I would buy it. ❌
Il passato qui non parla del passato: parla di un presente che non è vero.
