← 27 Reporting verbs

27.1 "Say" and "tell"

Sono i due verbi più usati per riportare, e si distinguono per una cosa sola: tell vuole il destinatario, say no.

VerboCostruzione
saysay (that) + frase
telltell qualcuno (that) + frase
  • He said he was tired.
  • He told me he was tired.

Attenzione

È l'errore italiano numero uno del capitolo, perché dire copre entrambi:

  • He told me. ✅ — He said me. ❌
  • He said to me. ✅ — He told to me. ❌

Regola pratica: tell + persona senza preposizione; say + persona solo con to, e comunque è raro.

Alcune espressioni con tell non hanno destinatario e vanno imparate a parte: tell the truth, tell a lie, tell a story, tell the time.
